MALIBU’S STORY
Malibu must have been the most spectacular puppy from a top breeder. When Malibu’s new family came to get a puppy, we can imagine all the little fluff balls running to the prospective new families. We can imagine the families laughing with delight as they picked their new family member. I’m sure they had comfy beds and treats and lots of toys waiting back home. We can imagine baby Malibu, with so much zest and zeal for life happily bounding into someone’s arms. Malibu must have run to the wrong people, maybe she was picked because she was the most beautiful back then. We don’t know, but we do know that she was purchased only for commercial reasons, she was used to breed. She didn’t go home to a warm family, she didn’t go home to toys and fun, she went home to a cage. For years Malibu was bred, over and over, she cared for her puppies like a good mommy, over and over they were taken away from her and sold. Finally, one day Malibu was being taken somewhere, she was excited. Soon her excitement changed to terror, she was being dragged into a city shelter, and she could sense that something very bad was happening. There people would look at her and walk by, she was no longer young and desirable, she had a ear that hung down now because she had an ear infection that hadn’t been treated, she had grey around her muzzle, her coat was in bad shape. Malibu had been breed for so many years and not spayed, little did she know that probably the reason she was discarded was that she had a mammary tumor that required surgery. Pleas on the web-site were announcing to anyone who would listen that Malibu’s life was scheduled to end. A handful of dedicated volunteers decided to take on saving Malibu’s life themselves, the rescue was dealing with so many other tragedies that they stepped in to make sure Malibu didn’t end her life without every having really lived. Malibu has had her surgery; she is feeling good and is now waiting to live the life she always wanted to live. We know Malibu will have to wait longer, waiting for that special family; sadly she has a 10% chance that her cancer may spread at some point in her life. We look at it as a 90% chance that she will live a wonderful and most deserving life. An opportunity she has never had and most certainly deserves. We always say we see the worst of people and the best of people in rescue; we just have faith that there is a special person out there who will open their heart and home to such a deserving dog.
